Cornelious Brown IV threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, and Jarel Williams caught eight passes for 175 yards as Alabama A&M defeated Tennessee State 30-3 Saturday night at Louis Crews Stadium for its second consecutive Legacy Series victory. Alabama A&M improved to 2-1, while Tennessee State fell to 0-3.

A Turnover Sparks Alabama A&M’s Fast Start

Alabama A&M forced the game’s first turnover when Jeremiah Hudson-Davis intercepted Daylin Lee as Tennessee State drove into Bulldog territory, handing the ball back to Alabama A&M with just under nine minutes left in the first quarter. Brown, who opened the game 10 for 10 passing, needed only one play to cash in, finding Williams down the left sideline for a 61-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. After a Tennessee State punt, Brown connected with Jaylan Bean for 31 yards and capped the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Price, extending the lead to 14-0 with 3:17 left in the first quarter. Brown finished 24 of 38 for 326 yards with one interception, and the pick was Tennessee State’s first turnover of a season in which the Tigers entered the day without one.

Tennessee State’s Lone Points Come on a Preston Hurless Field Goal

Tennessee State’s only points came on a 37-yard field goal from Preston Hurless midway through the second quarter, its lone scoring drive of the afternoon. Daylin Lee completed 19 of 41 passes for 187 yards with two interceptions, and Brenton Paul led the Tigers’ rushing attack with 40 yards on 12 carries. Alabama A&M answered Hurless’s field goal with two of its own from David Faulk, a 35-yarder set up by a 67-yard completion from Brown to Williams, and a 28-yarder, to take a 20-3 lead into halftime.

Faulk and the Bulldogs Pull Away in the Fourth Quarter

Ty’Jarian Williams broke a 46-yard run to put Alabama A&M in the red zone early in the fourth quarter, and four plays later Brown found Bean for an 11-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 27-3. Faulk, who is 5 for 5 on field goals this season, closed out the scoring with a 22-yard field goal after Alabama A&M reached the Tennessee State 4. Alabama A&M outgained Tennessee State 452 yards to 251 while forcing three Tennessee State turnovers, two interceptions and a lost fumble, without giving the ball away itself.

The win was Alabama A&M’s second in as many Legacy Series meetings and, by the Bulldogs’ count, their largest margin of victory in a series now played 31 times, with Alabama A&M improving to 10-21 against Tennessee State.
