By the time final cuts land at the end of August, most of the offseason talk about HBCU players and the NFL has already happened. The draft picks got their headlines in April. The undrafted free-agent signings received a shorter cycle of attention in May. What tends to go uncounted is the number that actually matters going into the season: how many of those players are still on a roster when Week 1 kicks off.

As of September 1, 2026, the answer is 29. Twenty-nine players with HBCU roots are on an NFL 53-man roster or a practice squad heading into Week 1. Twenty-one made a 53-man roster. Eight are on a practice squad. Together they represent 15 different HBCU programs and 16 of the NFL’s 32 teams, exactly half the league.

The Number Behind the Number

While 29 former HBCU student-athletes made these rosters, including 21 who made 53-man rosters, that count isn’t fixed. Practice squad spots turn over through waiver claims and injury settlements almost every week once the season starts. A player cut in late August can be back on a roster by Week 3. A player who made the 53 in Week 1 can be gone by Week 5. The number is worth reporting precisely because it is a snapshot and not a settled outcome, the same way an opening-day roster in any sport is a starting point rather than a final answer.

Where the 29 do agree is on how they got there. Fifteen of them, more than half, signed as undrafted free agents. Eight were drafted directly out of an HBCU program. Six were drafted after transferring from an HBCU to an FBS program for a final college season, keeping their HBCU roots for pipeline-tracking purposes even though their draft card lists the transfer school.

The transfer path is the newest of the three paths taken, and it is concentrated entirely in the last two draft classes. Every transfer-path pick in this group came from 2025 or 2026: Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, and Bhayshul Tuten in 2025, and Kevin Coleman Jr., Karon Prunty, and Andre Fuller in 2026. No player who transferred from an HBCU to an FBS program was drafted before 2025 in this dataset. Direct HBCU draft picks, by contrast, stretch much further back in this group, with Javon Hargrave’s 2016 selection the earliest year represented among the 29.

Jackson State Leads HBCUs, Dallas Leads the Teams

Fifteen different HBCU programs have at least one player on a Week 1 roster or practice squad. Jackson State leads with five: a mix of the Deion Sanders-era transfers (Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Kevin Coleman Jr., Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig) and James Houston IV, a 2022 draft pick who stayed at Jackson State through the draft rather than transferring. Florida A&M and NC Central follow with three players each. Alcorn State, Alabama State, South Carolina State, Albany State, Morgan State, and NC A&T each have two.

On the NFL side, the Dallas Cowboys carry the most HBCU-rooted players into Week 1 with five: three on the 53-man roster (Markquese Bell, Cobie Durant, James Houston IV) and two on the practice squad (Isaiah Land, Nick Leverett). The Jacksonville Jaguars are next with four, split evenly between the roster (Travis Hunter, Bhayshul Tuten) and the practice squad (Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig, J’Mari Taylor).

What the Practice Squad Number Is Not Counting

Eight players on a practice squad is not the full measure of roster retention. It leaves out the players who were on a practice squad in 2025, got cut in this year’s roster moves, and have not landed anywhere since, a list that includes Brandon Parker, Ricky Lee, Quinton Bell, Antonio Hamilton Sr., Robert McDaniel, Terrell Jennings, and Joaquin Davis. It also leaves out Jacob Roberts and Aaron Smith, both waived with an injury designation in the final round of cuts, whose next step depends on a waiver claim or a team’s injured reserve decision rather than a signing announcement.

This is a fluid situation, as these free agents could land on the practice squad or 53-man rosters at any point during the regular season

The 2026 Class, One Rookie Cycle In

As we reported earlier this year, the 2026 draft class produced zero players taken directly from an HBCU program, continuing a pattern that has held in three of the last six years. It did produce three transfer-path draft picks (Kevin Coleman Jr., Karon Prunty, Andre Fuller), nine confirmed UDFA signings, and ten minicamp tryout invitations that did not result in a contract.

Six players tied to the 2026 class are on a Week 1 roster or practice squad: Coleman Jr., Prunty, and Erick Hunter on a 53-man roster, and Fuller, J’Mari Taylor, and Dexter Moody on a practice squad. That means all three transfer-path draft picks made a Week 1 roster or practice squad, while most of the UDFA and minicamp group did not. It also means the April headline “zero direct picks” undersells what the class produced by September. Erick Hunter, a Morgan State linebacker who signed with Detroit as a UDFA, was cut in the Lions’ final roster move on August 30 and picked up by New England the next day, an outcome that would not show up in any count taken before Labor Day.

This count sits alongside and partly overlaps with the dashboard’s broader veteran tracking, which follows HBCU-connected players over a longer historical window regardless of draft class. The 29 figure here is specific to the 2026 Class tab’s Week 1 accounting, the clearest available answer to a simple question: as the season starts, how many HBCU players are actually on a team?
