The Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff, presented by Toyota, opened the 2026 college football season the way it has opened most of the last several seasons, with a national ABC window and a television audience that keeps climbing. Howard’s 31-24 win over Alabama A&M on Aug. 29, capped by a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Most Valuable Player Ja’Shawn Scroggins, averaged 1.2 million viewers and peaked at 1.7 million, according to Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel measurement. That average was up 10 percent from last year’s game and made the 2026 edition the second-most-watched MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff since 2024, according to ESPN Events.
The game aired opposite a full slate of Week 0 college football, and it held its own. TCU-North Carolina led all of ESPN’s opening-weekend games with an average audience of 4.9 million and a peak of 5.8 million. NC State-Virginia followed at an average of 3.2 million and a peak of 4 million. The MEAC/SWAC Challenge’s 1.2 million viewers put it among ESPN’s most-watched games of the weekend, a notable result in a Saturday that also carried more than 20 other games involving HBCU programs, several of them airing at the same time on ESPN2, ESPN+, and HBCU GO.
Six Years of Ratings History
The 10 percent year-over-year gain looks different depending on which number it is measured against. The 2025 game, North Carolina Central’s 31-14 win over Southern University, was initially reported at 866,960 viewers before Nielsen revised it upward to 1,092,151 after adopting its Big Data + Panel measurement system in September 2025, a change applied retroactively to Week 0 and Week 1 games from that season. The 2026 figure of 1.2 million is roughly 10 percent above that revised total, which is the figure ESPN Events used for comparison. Compared with the original, unrevised 2025 report, the year-over-year gain would appear considerably larger.
The high point of the six-year stretch remains 2024, when Florida A&M and Norfolk State drew an average audience of 1.3 million, a new all-time record for the event at the time and 27 percent above the previous mark of 1.016 million viewers, set in 2010 when Southern beat Delaware State 37-27 in the event’s sixth edition and unbroken for 14 years. The years in between show how much the audience has moved around from matchup to matchup: 2021’s Challenge, North Carolina Central against Alcorn State, drew 1.002 million, Jackson State and South Carolina State drew 922,000 in 2023, and Howard’s 2022 appearance in the event, a 23-13 loss to Alabama State, drew the smallest audience of the stretch at 485,000.
| Year | Matchup | Average Viewers | Notes |

Part of a Bigger ESPN Events Slate
The Challenge Kickoff functions as the opening bookend to ESPN Events’ HBCU football calendar, which runs through the Cricket Celebration Bowl in December at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. John Grant, the Challenge’s executive director, framed the 2026 audience within that broader portfolio in comments reported after the game, saying the numbers put the Challenge “among the top three in Week 0 for ESPN” and noting that the Celebration Bowl itself peaked at 3 million viewers last year, a figure he said had no equal elsewhere in HBCU sports.
The business side of the event has been moving in the same direction as the ratings. In July, ESPN Events extended its agreements with both the MEAC and the SWAC to keep the two conferences in the Challenge Kickoff and the Celebration Bowl through 2032, alongside separate media rights extensions that keep MEAC and SWAC football and basketball on ESPN networks through the 2030-31 academic year. Toyota joined this season as a new multi-year presenting sponsor of both events, alongside longtime title sponsor Cricket Wireless.
The event has also grown in scale on the field. This year’s Challenge was the 20th playing of a series that began in 2005 at Legion Field in Birmingham, with the MEAC holding an all-time edge of 12-7, though the SWAC has won three of the last four meetings. Next year’s Challenge Kickoff is set for Aug. 28, 2027, and will pair Morgan State against Alabama State.
