Pipeline Findings & Analysis
Key trends and takeaways from six years of HBCU → NFL pipeline data · Data Driven HBCU · April 2026
Finding 01
The UDFA Path Remains the Primary Entry Point
Of 78 players tracked from 2021–2026, 43 (55%) entered as UDFAs — more than all other categories combined. Only 13 players were drafted (6 directly from HBCUs, 7 via transfer). The UDFA path is not a consolation route; it is the main road. Players like Markquese Bell (DAL), Emanuel Wilson (GB), and Torricelli Simpkins (NO) built multi-year careers from UDFA signings. The challenge is a low survival rate: only about 7 of 43 UDFAs (16%) ultimately made an active 53-man roster.
Finding 02
The Transfer Pipeline Is the Fastest-Growing Trend
Zero HBCU-origin players were drafted via the transfer path from 2021–2024. In 2025, four players transferred from HBCUs and were drafted — Travis Hunter (#2 overall), Shedeur Sanders (Rd 5), Bhayshul Tuten (Rd 4), and Jacory Croskey-Merritt (Rd 7). In 2026, three more transferred HBCU players were drafted. This represents a structural shift: HBCU programs are now functioning as launching pads for players who can use one HBCU season to attract FBS attention and enter the draft pipeline through more visible programs.
Finding 03
2022 Was the Peak Draft Class; 2021 and 2024 Were Zero-Pick Years
The NFL drafted four players directly from HBCUs in 2022 — the best single-year total in this era — and seven of those players (including UDFAs) made 53-man rosters. By contrast, 2021 and 2024 produced no HBCU draft picks at all. The 2022 class (Williams, Durant, Houston, Carter) represents the ceiling; the 2023–2024 regression shows that direct HBCU draftees remain a rare outcome rather than a reliable pipeline. The 2026 class continues this pattern: zero direct picks, three transfers.
Finding 04
Jackson State and Florida A&M Lead in Pipeline Volume
Jackson State accounts for 12 pipeline players — the most of any HBCU — driven largely by the Deion Sanders era (Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Shilo Sanders, Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig) plus James Houston IV, Isaiah Bolden, and others. Florida A&M and NC Central each produced 8 pipeline players, with FAMU showing consistent output across UDFA signings and draft picks. NC A&T (7) leads among MEAC programs and has placed players via direct UDFA paths, draft rounds, and the transfer pipeline (Bhayshul Tuten, Karon Prunty).
Finding 05
Practice Squad Carries Underrepresented Value
At least 8 HBCU players carry practice squad status into the 2026 offseason, representing a form of roster retention that doesn't appear in 53-man counts. The PS pipeline matters: players like Keenan Isaac (elevated to 53 in 2023), James Houston IV (PS to 53 to starter), and Brandon Codrington (minicamp to 53) demonstrate that the path from PS to active roster is a real one. Tracking PS tenure as a separate outcome category reveals that the HBCU-to-NFL pipeline has more staying power than a simple "made the 53" metric would suggest.
Finding 06
Veterans Form a Durable Second Layer of HBCU NFL Presence
Separate from the 2021–2026 entry cohort, 20+ HBCU veterans remain active in the NFL as of April 2026. Players like Javon Hargrave (3× Pro Bowl, MIN), Tytus Howard (traded to CLE), Grover Stewart (8 straight Colts seasons), and Joshua Williams (2 Super Bowl rings, signed TEN) represent the durable tier of HBCU NFL production. This veteran layer is as significant as the incoming pipeline — and largely invisible in draft coverage. In the veterans section, South Carolina State leads with 4 veteran players (Hargrave, Hamilton Sr., Leonard, Durant) — the most of any school in the pre-2021 and multi-year contributor tiers. NC Central (4) and Prairie View A&M (2) follow. SC State also leads the full 2021–2026 pipeline with 7 total entries across all categories.
Analyst Verdict
The HBCU → NFL pipeline is real, productive, and evolving — but it is primarily an undrafted, practice-squad-driven, career-is-uncertain kind of production rather than a high-round draft pipeline. The 2025–2026 transfer surge is the most significant structural development in the six-year window, and it cuts both ways: it proves that HBCU athletes can compete at the highest levels while also raising questions about whether the talent development now shows up in NFL draft records for HBCU programs specifically. The programs doing the most work — Jackson State, Florida A&M, NC Central, NC A&T — deserve recognition for pipeline volume even when draft counts don't fully reflect their contributions.
